The Industry
There is a constant need for good quality,
enthusiastic Driving Instructors in our industry,
which is fortunate as we have an ever increasing
number of 17 yr. olds (approx. 1,000,000 per annum.)
who need to be professionally trained. The Driving
Test is becoming increasingly harder, with recent
changes that have made it longer. There is also the
prospect of Driver re-testing coming closer as the
scheme is implemented throughout Europe.
The Job
Independence, freedom, security & the flexibility to
work when you want to work are all characteristics
of the job of a Driving Instructor. You work from
home, in your own local area and are accountable
only to yourself and your pupils. Sounds ideal for
those that want to reduce stress, get out of the rat
race and want the freedom to work for themselves; no
more will you be accountable to others and under
pressure to do things you don't agree with. The job
brings with it the professional qualification of ‘Approved
Driving Instructor’, a qualification that is
yours for life (subject to periodic
check tests) and is
your passport to being able to continue earning a
good income throughout your life.
Key features: You
choose the hours and times you work so you can
quickly adjust your income by making more (or less)
hours available to work. You choose the days you
work. The job is respectable, clean and comfortable.
You start work from your doorstep in the warmth and
comfort of your car. No travelling, no working
outside in the cold and rain, no hard labour. The
work is enjoyable with the added pleasure of meeting
people from a variety of different backgrounds and
teaching them to pass their driving test. The
satisfaction gained can be immense and makes your
effort really worthwhile. Pupils rarely forget their
Driving Instructor and indeed a lot of your future
business will come from pupils recommending you to
their friends and family. There is no age limit
(apart from having to have held a full UK or EU
licence for 4 years) so we have a number of trainees
who start off the training with the intention of
using the licence to enable them to take early
retirement and to continue on after normal
retirement, earning a reasonable income. In summary,
by taking up a career as a Driving Instructor you
have the opportunity to change your entire lifestyle
from one where you work to live, to one where you
can start enjoying work as part of your life.
The Income
Have you ever added up the hours that you actually
spend in your current job, take it from leaving the
house to returning and you could well find that it
is considerably in excess of the 35 to 40 hours you
get paid. For example, if you leave at 7am and get
home at 7pm you are already working a 60 hour week!
As a driving instructor working in your local area
you start within a few minutes of leaving so a 52
lesson diary is probably no longer than you work at
present. Add to that the benefit of enjoying your
work, a car and no boss to account to and you could
find that life improves considerably. A weekly
franchise costs between £60 -£80 per week depending
on which school you go to and how much service they
provide. Whilst on a trainee licence it would
probably make sense to lease a car on a short term
leasing agreement (unless you have a suitable car of
your own). There are specialist leasing companies
that supply the driving instructor industry with
cars that already come with dual controls fitted and
servicing arrangements included. The cost will be in
the region of £60-£80 per week depending on the type
car and whether or not you want insurance included.
The total cost of your franchise and lease will
therefore be in the region of £140 -£160 per week,
both these amounts are tax deductible items as is
your fuel bill. Your weekly fuel bill will be in the
region of £45 (diesel) for a 40 hour week but
remember most of it is tax deductible. To see a
