APPROACHING JUNCTIONS MAJOR TO MINOR

Mirrors

INSTRUCTOR   “I noticed you didn’t check your door mirrors before signalling.  What’s the importance of doing so?”

PUPIL   “Sorry I wasn’t concentrating; I’m supposed to check for cyclists and motorbikes.”

INSTRUCTOR   “That’s right.  It’s vital you maintain concentration at all times when driving, remember your MSM routine and apply it at all times.”

INSTRUCTOR   “I saw you didn’t check your door mirrors before turning left.”

PUPIL   “I checked my interior mirror, that’s enough isn’t it?”

INSTRUCTOR   “It’s certainly important to check your interior mirror first but you must then check the appropriate door mirror at least twice before starting your turn.  Look for other vehicles coming up on the inside such as cyclist or motor cyclists.”

INSTRUCTOR   “I noticed you didn’t check your door mirrors before turning.”

PUPIL   “I didn’t seem to have time.”

INSTRUCTOR   “Start the MSM routine 2-3 seconds earlier to give you time to complete the manoeuvre without having to rush.”

INSTRUCTOR   “You weren’t using your mirrors effectively.  You were looking in them too quickly.”

PUPIL   “How long should I take to look in them?”

INSTRUCTOR   “About twice as long.  Roughly a couple of seconds to make sure you do know what is going on around you and how your actions might affect others.”

INSTRUCTOR   “I noticed you didn’t react sensibly to what you saw in the mirrors. Presumably you saw that motorbike trying to overtake us?”

PUPIL   “Yes I did, but I wasn’t sure what to do about it.”

INSTRUCTOR   “It would have been better if you’d eased off the gas pedal to allow him to overtake you quickly and resume a safe position in the road.”

INSTRUCTOR   “I didn’t see you checking your mirrors as you entered the new road. What should you be looking for?”

PUPIL   “I’m not really sure.”

INSTRUCTOR   “Well somebody might have followed us into the new road and be trying to overtake us.  It’s important that as soon as you have straightened up and before you start to accelerate, you must check your mirrors.”

Signals

INSTRUCTOR   “I noticed you were signalling too early as we approached the junction. How far back should you be when you start to signal?”

PUPIL   “I’m not sure.”

INSTRUCTOR   “It should be about 6-7 car lengths when turning left.  If you signal too early you may confuse other drivers into thinking you are about to pull over or possibly turn into a driveway.”
